The Tour of Britain is returning to Eden on Monday 5 September 2016 building on the tremendous success of the Cumbria stage of the cycle race last year, which culminated with a finish at Hartside. Eden District Council has announced that funding will once again be available to support communities who are holding events or planning activities to celebrate the Tour of Britain passing through.

Last year, communities across Eden embraced the Tour of Britain by holding events, decorating bikes, knitting jersey bunting and lining the route to cheer on the riders. The organisers praised the community engagement in Eden as some of the best there was for the whole race nationally.

Seven fantastic events/activities were funded last year, all of which were the result of tremendous efforts by the communities involved. These were:

  • Stainton CE Primary School PTA – Tour of Britain community walk, picnic and singing event at Pooley Bridge
  • Friends of Lazonby School – Tour of Britain community event in school and creation of aerial artwork in playground working with local artist Ben Gates
  • Ousby Parish Council- Signage, equipment and decorations for “Melmerby Welcomes Tour of Britain event'
  • Langwathby May Day Committee- Entertainment, banners, gazebo and paint for Tour of Britain event
  • Tirril and Sockbridge Parish Council- banners, bunting and paint for Tour of Britain Street Party event
  • Alston Moor Parish Council-Alston “Bike Off” Activities to support Tour of Britain
  • Croglin Village Hall Committee-“Croglin Welcomes the Tour of Britain Cycle Race” community event (pictured below)

""Councillor Mike Slee, Eden District Council's Economic Development Portfolio Holder, said: “Cycle races like the Tour of Britain engage crowds, bring together communities and create huge economic benefits for an area. This was so clearly evident from last year when 50,000 people attended the Cumbrian section of Stage Five in September which culminated in the spectacular mountain finish on Hartside. The net visitor expenditure impact for the Cumbrian part of Stage Five (which was almost entirely in Eden) was over £1.5million.

“The Tour of Britain will once again showcase Eden to a national and international audience and we are sure that our local communities will celebrate the race passing through in style. The Council has allocated £5,000 to support Tour of Britain community events and activities. There is up to £500 per parish available, so we would encourage groups within a parish to work together and we look forward to receiving applications from communities across the district."

The application form and guidance on how to apply is available on the Council's website here.

There will be a rolling application process with the final deadline for applications being Friday 19 August 2016. Awards will be granted within two weeks of an applicant receiving notification that their application has been successful.

If you do not have internet access, hard copies of the application form can be obtained by telephoning Sally Hemsley, Communities Officer on 01768 212483.

The follow criteria apply for grant applications for Tour of Britain events and activities:

Applications are welcome from community and voluntary groups, parish and town councils, village hall committees, Parent Teacher Associations, school support/friends groups, charities and social enterprises to hold events and activities in Eden to celebrate the Tour of Britain. We cannot accept applications from individuals or directly from schools.

We encourage community groups work together on joint applications as there is only £500 of funding available per parish.

Your group must have its own bank account and constitution or governing document.

100% funding is available. There is no need for match funding, although you may wish to pursue match funding if the cost of your event or activity exceeds £500.

Grants are paid 80% in advance and 20% on receipt of a project completion form and evidence of the event/activity having taken place e.g pictures, invoices, receipts etc. Only capital funding is available; we cannot fund salary costs or expenses for people's time etc.
