There will be a special seaside flavour to the only individual time trial stage of this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain international cycle race.

Tendring is hosting the ten-mile course around the streets and seafront in Clacton and Holland-on-Sea – and an official launch was held on the town’s beach today.

Mark Platt, Chairman of Tendring District Council (TDC), went along to carry out the ceremony and was joined by cyclists from the Council’s Beach Patrol Team.

Youngsters Charlie and Max Heffer, and Callum and Mia Lawrence were also invited to the special event on Martello Beach.

Tendring District Council managed to secure Stage Five of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain earlier this year, which will take place on Thursday 7 September.

The course has been planned out and the general timing will be from around 9.30pm to 2pm with the first rider off in the Stage Five time trial getting underway at 12:01.  Riders will depart on the out-and-back course, which starts and finishes on Marine Parade, at one-minute intervals, with the final ten riders going at tw0-minute time slots.

Cllr Platt said it is fantastic that such a top international sporting competition is coming to the District and will follow-on just days after the Clacton Airshow.

“I was lucky enough to see the Women’s Tour when in came to Tendring and that was something very special and a huge attraction for both residents and visitors alike,” he said.

“That was over a much longer circuit and very spread out. This is a time trial involving the very best of the world’s men cyclists up close and there will be so much action to see over the 16km.

“It will bring a huge economic boost to the area but more than that we hope it will leave a special legacy.

“We want people to take up cycling as part of their efforts to enjoy a healthier lifestyle and improve their wellbeing. That was why we invited some youngsters to the launch event.”

The Council already has plenty of experience of hosting top cycling events having put on stages of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour in both 2014 and 2015 with the same organisers, SweetSpot Group.

Those proved a massive success and generated huge interest in the area with tens of thousands of spectators along the route and global television coverage.

Stage Five is set to be the longest time trial to be staged since 2013 when it was won by Sir Bradley Wiggins at Knowsley Safari Park.  You can find details of the stage route by clicking here.

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is British Cycling’s premier road cycling event, giving fans the opportunity to see the world’s best teams and riders competing on their door step, taking place between Sunday 3 and Sunday 10 September 2017.
