Mention Gretna Green and you will evoke images of romantic trysts and frenzied horsemen. Back in the mid 18th century the little village of Gretna Green rocked England's 'respectable' society by becoming a popular destination for runaway couples who married there under Scots law.
More than 250 years ago the 1754 Marriage Act dramatically changed the course of Gretna Green's future and that of the countless numbers of couples who, banned from marrying by their parents and the church, took action and eloped to Gretna Green where within the Old Blacksmith's Shop the 'Blacksmith Priest' married them over the Anvil.
Here is where the legend of the Anvil began: it is said that by touching the famous Anvil good fortune in affairs of the heart will be yours.
Over 150 years ago curious travellers, intrigued by the many tales of romance and scandal, began to visit this little cottage and Blacksmith's workshop. These visits inspired the inception of one of Scotland's first visitor attractions: The World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre.
Today, it is one of Scotland's premier destinations, attracting visitors from all over the globe to its combination of historic attraction, wedding venue, shops and restaurants.
The family business who own and manage the attraction are also owners of Smiths Hotel. An award winning modern 4star boutique hotel, sitting opposite the ancient building of the Blacksmith's Shop, Smiths represents Gretna Green's future. Modern and stylish it is an asset to this wonderful place that is not only one of the UK's most visited attractions but also the world's best known and most romantic wedding destination.
Smiths at Gretna Green will be the backdrop for the finish of this year's Scottish stage of The Tour of Britain.
