As some of the world’s top cyclists are set to race past a number of its Suffolk stores, the East of England Co-op is inviting the local community to cheer on the riders of Britain’s premier road event.

The sixth stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain will take place on Friday 8th September along 183km of Suffolk roads, starting in Newmarket before concluding in the afternoon in Aldeburgh.

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting the community, the East of England Co-op will be giving out free samples of some of Suffolk’s finest produce from its Sourced Locally range outside two of its stores on the race route; Broad Street in Eye and on Aldeburgh High Street, near the race finish line. Adding to the festivities will be food demonstrations from local suppliers, and the Co-op team ready to help the community cheer on the riders by giving out free handheld flags.

Roger Grosvenor, Joint Chief Executive at the East of England Co-op, said: “With the race route going straight through the middle of Suffolk, this is the perfect opportunity to showcase Suffolk’s finest produce that we are proud to stock. We cannot wait to see world class riders compete for the coveted Green Jersey right outside our store and look forward to enjoying the day with our customers and community.”

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain will race past eight other East of England Co-op stores, where the team and customers will be coming out in force to cheer on the cyclists as they cycle past.

Sourced Locally was set up in 2007 to support local producers and encourage shoppers to buy local, seasonal, quality produce. There are now thousands of local products in East of England Co-op food stores, and the scheme has ploughed £57 million back into the region.
