With the early finish to the 2022 AJ Bell Tour of Britain, Movistar Team’s Gonzalo Serrano made history by becoming the first Spaniard to win the race.

Serrano moved into the AJ Bell leader’s jersey following his victory on stage four in North Yorkshire, where he outsprinted home favourite Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers) on the drag up to the finish line in Duncombe Park, Helmsley.

Although Pidcock trimmed his deficit to three seconds as a result of time bonuses on the finish line in Mansfield on stage five, the 28-year-old from Madrid the finished safely in the peloton and will enter the record books as the 2022 winner.

Speaking after the stage finish in Mansfield, a few hours before the cancellation of the race’s final three stages and the confirmation of his victory, Serrano said:  “I am very happy. The Tour of Britain is a very good race. There’s a lot of people in the streets and today especially it was incredible with the crowds. I am very happy with these three days. I don’t know if it is possible to win, but it’s okay.”

The AJ Bell Tour of Britain seems to suit Serrano: he has claimed six top-10 stage finishes from 12 road stages in the past two editions, and his consistent finishing previously helped him finish 11th overall in the 2021 race.

Fast forward 12 months and the Spaniard was fourth on stage one at Glenshee Ski Centre before he placed eighth in the rain in Sunderland two days later. Serrano said: “This race is very good for me. It is important to be in the top five or ten – it is a very good position, so this year is good for me.”
