Four-time Grand Tour stage winner Mikel Landa will make his OVO Energy Tour of Britain debut this weekend when they lead a strong Movistar Team line-up in the UK’s most prestigious cycle race.

Landa (29), who has finished fourth, seventh and sixth in the last three editions of the Tour de France, has never previously raced a single day as a professional on British soil.

Also famed for his climbing abilities, the Spaniard has previously claimed overall honours in the Giro del Trentino (2016) and Tour of Burgos (2017) stage races.

UPDATE (06/09): Despite race organisers and the Movistar Team following all procedures, Giro d’Italia winner Richard Carapaz was not granted a visa in time to compete in the event.

Joining them for this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain are Andrey Amador (twice a top-10 finisher in the Giro d’Italia), Carlos Barbero, Hector Carretero, Eduardo Sepulveda and Carlos Verona in what forms the strongest line-up the long-standing Spanish team have ever selected for the race.

Competing riders

Already announced to ride this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain is Team Jumbo-Visma Cycling’s Dylan Groenewegen, a four-time Tour de France stage winner. The Dutch sprinter has previously won two stages in the OVO Energy Tour of Britain – in Builth Wells (2016) and Cheltenham (2017).

Team Dimension Data’s Mark Cavendish and Steve Cummings will also be in action. Cavendish, the best sprinter of all-time, has won 10 stages of the race while Cummings was crowned the Tour’s 2016 champion.

Mathieu van der Poel, arguably the hottest property in cycling right now, will make his OVO Energy Tour of Britain debut this year. The 24-year-old Dutchman has been one of the standout names of the 2019 cycling season, winning the prestigious Amstel Gold Race in April, as well as becoming World, European and Dutch cyclo-cross champion.

British duo Alex Dowsett (a stage winner in 2011) and Harry Tanfield will lead Team KATUSHA ALPECIN in the race.
