SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling and Madison Genesis were the big winners in the battle to qualify for this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain (7-14 September) at the two-day Tour of the Reservoir last weekend.

James Shaw took SwiftCarbon’s biggest victory of the season in Northumberland, claiming both the stage two victory and overall title, to move his team back into a Tour of Britain qualification slot.

Shaw narrowly beat Matt Holmes, runner-up in last year’s Eisberg sprints competition in Britain’s biggest bike race, as Madison Genesis moved closer to qualifying for September’s eight-day race.

Standings after round eight

SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling moved from fifth to third as a result of Shaw’s victory, leapfrogging Team WIGGINS and Vitus Pro Cycling p/b Brother UK. Interestingly, SwiftCarbon are six points ahead of Vitus Pro Cycling with six qualifying rounds left.

Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes remain in a commanding position, sitting 14 points clear of SwiftCarbon in third, although Madison Genesis moved to within four points of them at the top of the qualification standings. The top two are within touching distance of mathematically confirming their invitation to the OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

OVO Energy Tour of Britain team qualification process

The qualification process has been devised once again by SweetSpot Group, organisers of the Tour of Britain, and British Cycling, with full consultation of competing teams throughout.

First introduced in 2016, the process establishes a fair and transparent selection of eligible British teams into the race, as well as ensuring full support of the HSBC UK | National Road and Circuit Series, OVO Energy Tour Series, HSBC UK | National Road Championships and the country’s UCI-ranked events each year.
