Top British time triallist James Gullen got a taste of Clacton in preparation for next month’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

Stage Five heads for the coast on September 7 and Gullen from the JLT Condor team will be competing, barring any injuries in the meantime.

The 27-year-old Yorkshireman is looking forward to the challenge of the ten-mile individual time trial around Clacton and Holland-on-Sea. He carried out a recce with his coach Tim Kennaugh and Tour of Britain Route Director Andy Hawes earlier this week.

“It was great to get the chance to have a look round the course and figure out any potential issues that might crop up during the event,” he said.

“It is pretty flat with no energy-sapping climbs which are one less thing to worry about. I have never been here before and the area is totally fresh to me.”

Gullen is in good form having finished third in the National Time Trial Championships and is looking to claim a top ten spot among the 120 riders.

It is his first Tour of Britain and he is delighted to finally be taking part in what he says is a special occasion for all British cyclists.

“It is on home soil in front of big home crowds and I am really looking forward to it,” he added. “Spectators also have the chance to get up close and personal with the riders as they fly past – and it’s all free.”

Gullen once recorded 17 minutes 09 seconds for a ten-mile time trial which is the fastest time ever by a British rider.

It is definitely his most famed discipline and he has a host of victories to his name, along with strong placings at national events.

Stage Five will start at the Martello Coach and Car Park and the finish is on Clacton Seafront.

A provisional rider list featuring all 120-riders for the OVO Energy Tour of Britain will be published towards the end of August.

Mick Skeels, Tendring District Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Tourism, said:

“The names of the teams and riders are beginning to filter through and it is certainly whetting the appetite.

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is certainly going to pull in the crowds and I expect that spectators will be lining the route to get the best possible vantage point.”

OVO Energy, the UK’s top rated independent energy supplier was announced as the title sponsor of the Tour of Britain at the end of April.
