Taking place weeks after Sir Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France and the historic London 2012 Olympic Games, enthusiasm for cycling had reached unprecedented levels in time for the ninth edition of the modern Tour of Britain.
Wiggins and then road world champion Mark Cavendish – who went on to win three stages – were the undisputed stars of that year’s race. Elsewhere, Giro d’Italia champion Ivan Basso and Olympic gold medallist Samuel Sanchez made unforgettable race debuts, while SKODA King of the Mountains winner Kristian House was a tireless attacker throughout.
Oh, and then there were the crowds: at the time, the 2012 roadside following was the largest in modern Tour of Britain history!
